This site is both my weblog & my business site. If you are looking for information about my business and associates, click on the “Bio” and “Services” tab at the top of the site.

My blog offers personal reflections – my thoughts on community, passion, purpose, playtime and paychecks.

For the past five years, my focus has been the aging population. Recently, I’ve been asked to share my ideas about innovative projects/programs targeted to Aging BABY BOOMERS those of us who are reaching the age of 50 and beyond. My interests led me here – to Wordpress – to exchange info and experiences with like-minded folks. I feel like I’m still on the leading edge – blogging, tweeting, making/editing videos and recording music on my computers – two MacBook Pros and a brand new G5.

Your comments are most welcome. Follow my blog for new and innovative ideas about our rapidly aging population – here in my community – my own little corner of the world. Contact me if you want more info about my professional services.

A few years ago, I took a 12 month break and went in search of “the rest of my life.”

After a brief experience with “traditional retirement”, I decided to go back to University. There I discovered a new vision – the big idea of building a network for aging boomers that would provide support, access to information, economic benefits and a sense of community. Lifelong eductors call this “even higher” education—turning experience into significance or using our experience to give birth to something new.

Some of us have decided to embark on a third or fourth career – redefining the concept of retirement in our own lives. The “new retirement” is said to be part time education, part time leisure and part time work.

I call it “Passion – Purpose – Playtime – AND Paycheck.”

My interests led me to study aspects of Canada’s aging population and I landed at the doorstep of a concept called A SILVER ECONOMY – a model for community economic development and social enterprise.

My sabbatical helped me develop a strategy to fully integrate my past career experiences with new plans and interests. And so – a new career was born. I have re-invented myself more times than Madonna!

Older people want to remain involved and a vital part of the community. Personally, I include “work” in my definition of creative self-expression. I believe my research and creative ideas have resulted in new and innovative programs/projects that build on this understanding and will result in social and economic benefits for people my age and older.

I offer consulting services, training workshops and unique presentations on late career development and later life transitions with a strong desire to share everything I have learned through my own process.

Creative self-expression is inherent to the performing arts, visual arts and the language arts – spoken word and literature. Other outlets for creative self-expression include crafts such as sewing, cooking, woodworking, and pottery.

Another important use of our creativity is the expression of our ideas and values through our paid and unpaid work which might include problem solving, program or product development, systems design, managing/mentoring human potential, and communicating with co-workers/customers.

Alternate forms of work? Baby boomers are becoming more attuned to how we can actually borrow, develop and share ideas from other economic systems. The assumption that everyone should be a full-time employee is out dated industrialist ideology. Creative ecologies are emerging where everybody can participate. One response to the identity-deprived global economy is to build “identity communities” and I believe this is where the creativity, maturity and experience of older workers can shine.

For example, Germany has identified the concept of a “silver economy.” Policy makers started promoting seniors’ economic development rather than taking a traditional social welfare and seniors’ consumption approach. A key component to the action plan was to use existing regulatory tools to induce employment for seniors, raising the demand for seniorpreneurs’ services and re-designing jobs.

Recently, a Bank of Montreal think tank reported many Canadian baby boomers want to enjoy the freedom to stay in the workforce, not necessarily for money, but largely to keep mentally active and to maintain creative and social interactions. Work is an important aspect of their social identity. See article – Ready to be a seniorpreneur? in 50plus.com.

Other Canadians are delaying plans for their retirement because of financial need. Part time, contractual, and seasonal work can have a big impact on their quality of life – as they age.

Studies abound about the impact of Canada’s aging population on the labour force. Yet, despite all the warnings, it appears Canadian employers and policy makers haven’t done much to prepare. In a survey conducted late last year by the Conference Board of Canada, more than three-quarters of organizations, or 77%, said the greying of the Canadian labour pool will be an issue for them. But the survey also indicated just 6% are making efforts to hold on to mature workers by offering more opportunities for flexibility, innovation and mentoring.

New outlets for self-expression include the digital arts, which have become very accessible as the personal computer has come down in price. Anecdotal evidence would suggest more aging baby boomers are enthusiastically using computers to create imaginative communities on the Internet, producing videos, and home-recorded advertising commercials and electronic music. We are presented with a great opportunity to use new media to share ideas and create new communities of interest and economy.

Homepreneurship , cottage industry and social enterprise are important considerations for older people who need to earn extra income.

It is said the “new retirement” will include leisure activity and meaningful work. Perhaps the indelible creative spirit is not so easily defeated by age.
